But they’re more common in children and people who work or play outdoors. Chiggers like to crawl into cool, moist areas of your body where your clothing fits tightly against you–like under the arms, inside socks or shoes, or under bra straps.

How do you get rid of chiggers?

The good news is that, since they are so small, chiggers really can’t dig into your skin very far. That means that they will dry up and die within a few days, even without treatment. However, getting rid of them right away makes the itching go away much quicker! Here’s what to do if you think you have chiggers. If one or two of these remedies work for you, great-if not, try another one.

1). Wash the bites with soap and water: When you first notice a bite, wash it gently with soap and warm water. Do this several times a day until the redness goes away completely. This may take several days.

2). Put on calamine lotion: Calamine lotion will help ease the itching and dry out the bite so it heals faster. You can get calamine lotion at most drug stores.

3). Try an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream: Hydrocortisone is a type of cream you can buy without a prescription that will calm down your skin and stop the itching. A thin coating rubbed on the bites a few times a day should do the trick. Make sure to read directions carefully before you use this product! If symptoms don’t go away in seven to ten days, call your doctor.

There is no official medical solution to chiggers and the best way of dealing with them is simply prevention.

Prevention:

First, avoid walking through tall grass and bushes where you risk running into them directly. However, this isn’t always possible so here are some other methods.

Wear long pants, closed toed shoes, gloves and a hat Cover your entire body in Oil of Cloves Rub vaseline on your legs around where your pants end Buy yourself a bottle of Tea Tree oil which will keep the little buggers away Wash off any clothing that has been exposed or that you think might have chiggers on it If you do get them and they start to itch take 1/4th cup apple cider vinegar and put it in a tub of warm water.

Soak the infected areas for 20 minutes or until all itching has stopped Repeat this treatment once every hour until you no longer itch. Note: the last two tips are most effective when used together with some form of exfoliator to get rid of the dead skin on which they tend to stick best, such as gloves or pumice stones
